The origins of MetLife go back to 1863 when a group of New York City businessmen raised $100,000 to found the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company. The business catered to Civil War sailors and soldiers. In a reorganization the firm's name was changed to Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. By 1909 MetLife became the nation's largest life insurer in the United States, a position they hold today. MetLife is also becoming one of America's leading Auto and Home insurance carriers.

They landed on Fortune's list of most admired companies and in 2004 were named as one of America's best managed companies. Safeco startled the established insurance industry in 1923 when it organized as a company in Seattle, Washington, far from the recognized insurance centers at the time, located in Northeast. In 2004, Safeco sold its life and investment operations to focus solely on property and casualty insurance. In 1998 Safeco secured the naming rights to the Seattle Mariner baseball park.
