Tucson is the 2nd largest city in Arizona, with a population of about 500,000. It is also one of the 50th largest cities in the United States. This once sleepy town is now considered one of the fastest growing cities in America. It has a great college called the University of Arizona. They are well known and respected for many reasons but probably most is their medical school, the U of A Medical School. We have a friend’s daughter who graduated as a nurse. Today, she now has an excellent job with one of the best hospitals in the country.
The town is also well known for its sports program – specifically the Arizona Wildcat basketball program. Coach Lute Olsen built it into one of the premiere programs in the nation. After a few down seasons the basketball program is back to prominence. It would not surprise me to see them win a national championship in 2014 or 2015. If you love sports you have to admire the job their program is doing.
Ok, what about auto insurance? Tucson has its ups and downs with insurance costs. It is not a mega-city and does not have bumper to bumper traffic every hour of the work day. They have traffic issues from time to time of course. But they have nothing out of the ordinary with traffic for a city its size.
That brings us to thefts.
By virtue of being close to the border, Tucson suffers from its share of car thefts and other claims. Western states such as Arizona account for approximately 38 percent of all thefts nationwide, according to one such report. That is huge number and it is one reason why you may pay more for auto insurance in this city. Sometimes the news will report negative stories about insurance carriers but once in awhile it important to realize that insurance carriers are paying claims in more ways than we know.
Insurance companies would be ecstatic if all they had to do was pay claims for real accidents with real customers. But car thefts, vandalism and such claims affect everyone.
