Here is a little information on this great town.

Phoenix has a rich and interesting history. Today it is the sixth most populous city in the United States, home to around one and a half million people. Yet, you never seem to feel like it is that big. It’s easy to imagine a big city should be more like New York, Los Angeles or Houston. But Phoenix is one of the biggest in the country.

It was founded in 1861 near the Salt River area and was incorporated in 1881. Of course you would expect any new development back in those days to be near water, especially in the desert where summer temperatures are commonly over one hundred degrees. Without air conditioning it must have been dreadful. I am unsure when air conditioning became available but no doubt people were excited that it happened. A/C is one reason places like Phoenix flourished.

For more than 2000 years the Hohokam people lived in the Phoenix area. A hardworking and industrious people they dug roughly 135 miles of canal. Many of the same paths they used became the Arizona canals the deliver water throughout the city and county.

Following the Mexican-American war in 1848 Arizona became part of the United States. It was not referred to as Arizona just yet, as it was a part of New Mexico territory at the time. The first non-native settlement occurred in 1865 when the army created Fort McDowell. Today you know it as the Fort McDowell casino. Shortly thereafter settlers came to the Tempe area and began living here.

Jack Swilling was a confederate veteran from the civil war. He came to the area around 1867 and believed that if water canals were built it could provide ample water for farming. He built canals following the examples set by native Americans and created what is now Phoenix. Swilling became the city’s first postmaster. Phoenix was incorporated in 1881. Over the past thirty years Phoenix has been one of the fastest growing cities in the country.

Surrounding communities have benefited from the growth of Phoenix and the jobs the town has provided. As the center of the state it provides a world reputation as a great place to live and visit. Other than the brutal summer temperatures the city is a great place to live the other 9 months of the year. With air conditioning, swimming pools and its close proximity to mountains and even California it is a highly desirable place to live.
