The origins of MetLife go back to 1863 when a group of New York City businessmen raised $100,000 to found the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company. The business catered to Civil War sailors and soldiers. In a reorganization the firm's name was changed to Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. By 1909 MetLife became the nation's largest life insurer in the United States, a position they hold today. MetLife is also becoming one of America's leading Auto and Home insurance carriers.
